Honoring the loss of our former legal director Bill GoodmanWe are reeling from the loss of the legendary Bill Goodman, our former legal director, who died suddenly on November 17. Since then, those of us who loved him and learned from him have been sharing stories, articles, and videos about this utterly fearless and irreverent warrior for justice, whose social conscience developed at a young age and grew only more expansive as he grew older. His hatred of oppression was pure; he was all heart. With his two stints as our legal director, 1998-2003 and 2005-2007, Bill left a lasting mark on our organization, the many lawyers he mentored—and the country. Under his leadership, we boldly challenged fascism in all its forms. He headed Daniels v. the City of New York, part of our successful, landmark challenge of the NYPD’s racist stop-and-frisk policy. Bill lived ahead of the curve, including by championing our work for Palestinian liberation. After 9/11, Bill immediately grasped the impending threat to our freedoms, pushing us to play an early and lead role in the battle against the Bush administration’s human rights abuses. Honoring the loss of our friend Holly MaguiganWe mourn the passing of Holly Maguigan, a pathbreaking criminal defense lawyer, teacher, and scholar who changed public understanding of how the law should treat survivors of domestic violence. She served on the boards of important institutions like MADRE and the William Kunstler Fund for Racial Justice and was on the faculty at NYU Law School for 30 years. The only thing that rivaled Holly's passion for social justice was her love of family, including her daughter, grandchildren, and husband, Abdeen Jabara, a former beloved member of our staff and board. Holly mentored many of us – and inspired all of us with her visionary work leveraging the law to forge social progress. Holly was a key figure in a transformative legal movement that legitimized the self-defense defense in domestic violence cases. This was a virtually unheard-of concept at the outset of her career as a public defender.
Respect for the dignity and humanity of women guided her work, always. Read our full statement on our website. Photo credit Democracy Now! | ||
