“You do not belong here on earth!” people yell at the filmmaker and crew of Troublers, a film by Young Lee that tells the chilling story of repression LGBTQI community members face in South Korea. The film centers the voices of elders and others caught up in the national debate and shines a light on their struggle. Whether you are familiar with contemporary issues in Korea or this is your first introduction, you will walk away having learned something new.
This is a film of resilience, resistance, and solidarity, and the Center for Constitutional Rights along with co-sponsors Gay Asian Pacific Islander Men of New York (GAPIMNY) and Q-WAVE are proud to invite you to this special screening during the same month we remember the Stonewall uprisings in the West Village. Before the film, award-winning Director Young Lee will deliver a special message. Afterwards, CCR Advocacy Associate Meejin Richart will moderate a discussion with Lesbian Counseling Center member Jinhwa Lee and Queens Pride House Board President Pauline Park about the current LGBTQI movement in South Korea.
While June is a month of celebration and pride, we remember the spirit of Stonewall and how Pride first came to be – through struggle like that depicted in Troublers. Please note space is limited and RSVP is strongly recommended.
Freedom Flicks is a film series where CCR showcases cutting-edge films. Screenings are free. After each screening, we host a talk back to share impressions of the film, discuss its themes, and build community.
