CCR Welcomes Its 2018 Summer Interns

Cohort will be working in the Legal and Communications Departments

July 17, 2018, New York – The Center for Constitutional Rights welcomed 14 interns this summer: 12 are in the Ella Baker Summer Internship Program, one in Communications, and the Grinnell University intern works across the organization.

The law students in the Ella Baker Summer Internship Program (Ellas), founded in 1987 to honor the legacy of Ella Baker, a hero of the civil rights movement, are paired with seasoned lawyers who serve as mentors. The Ellas have an opportunity to work with dockets such as Government Misconduct/Racial Justice, the Guantanamo Global Justice Initiative, and International Human Rights. They also have a chance to work with CCR's Advocay staff on various campaigns. Throughout the summer, the Ellas will experience the unique opportunities and challenges of doing social justice lawyering at a national organization.

“We’re so excited to have the Ellas join us for the summer; they always bring so much passion, energy, and radical innovation to the office,” said Rachel Meeropol, senior staff attorney and associate director of legal training at CCR. “The Ella Baker Summer Internship Program helps CCR support our mission of training the next generation of constitutional and human rights attorneys.”

CCR is also hosting a Communications intern and an intern from Grinnell University this summer.

“It has been five years since the Communications Department has had an intern, so this will be a special summer for us,” said Chandra M. Hayslett, communications director. “We’re looking forward to having Jayson (Swain) be an instrumental part in helping the Communications Department implement a number of new and exciting programs this summer.”
