Center for Constitutional Rights Welcomes Its 2019 Summer Interns

This year’s cohort will join the Legal, Communications, and Executive Departments

June 5, 2019, New York – The Center for Constitutional Rights welcomed 16 summer interns to its offices this week. Eleven law students will be taking part in the Ella Baker Summer Internship Program, and five undergraduate students will be working with all program staff.

The Ella Baker Summer Internship Program was founded in 1987 to honor the legacy of civil rights and feminist hero Ella Baker, and focuses on training the next generation of movement lawyers. The Ellas will work with the Center for Constitutional Rights civil and human rights attorneys who will serve as professional mentors. This summer, the Ellas will have the opportunity to work on issues including mass incarceration, defense of movement activists, and Palestine solidarity. They will also have the opportunity to work with the Center for Constitutional Rights’ Advocacy staff on various campaigns. Throughout the summer, the Ellas will experience the unique opportunities and challenges of doing social justice lawyering at a national organization.

“We are thrilled to welcome this year’s Ella Baker interns” said Rachel Meeropol, Senior Staff Attorney and Associate Director of Legal Training at the Center for Constitutional Rights. “The Ellas always strengthen our work with their energy, passion, and imaginative legal thinking and are a huge asset to the organization.”

The Center for Constitutional Rights will also be hosting five undergraduate interns. One will be joining the Communications team, one will be working across program areas, and three will work with Executive Director Vince Warren on a research project exploring the relationship of government rhetoric and narrative to certain discriminatory policies.
