August 22, 2013, New York – In response to Chelsea Manning’s announcement today of her gender identity, the Center for Constitutional Rights issued the following statement:
The Center for Constitutional Rights once again applauds the courage of Chelsea Manning, first for being willing to risk her own freedom in service to her country and human rights, and now for having the courage to declare her gender identity while on the brink of spending the next three decades in prison for her earlier act of courage as a whistleblower. We wholeheartedly support her and her attorneys’ efforts to enable her to live fully in accordance with her identity.
